Ibiza hot spots you can explore with our crew

Cala Bassa boasts some of the clearest, cleanest water you’ll ever see in the beaches in Ibiza and the softest golden sand – it’s enough to make you think you’ve escaped the Med (not that you’d want to!) and made it to Thailand.

Large rock formations on either side of the beach are a constant reminder however, of the rocky and rustic terrain of Ibiza and popular with dare devil rock jumpers, while plenty of trees around the beach provide shade for those sensitive to sun, perfect for picnics and family days out.

In the island's west is Cala Conta, formed of several stretches of sand. There are two regular beaches and a nudist one, all with pretty Jurassic rocky backdrops and views which really are made of dreams. Go early morning or early evening if you want to miss the summer crowds

The golden sand is perfect for little ones, with gentle, shallow and crystal clear water, while another rockier ledge leads to a sheltered, private cove where the sea is a little deeper, yet amazingly clean and clear.

Café Mambo had humble beginnings, but what started with the small spark of an idea and a dilapidated finca on the coastal rocks of San Antonio has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.

Established in 1994 by Javier Anadon, the first ever Mambo opening party was packed largely thanks to word of mouth (that’s how they did it back then!) and soundtracked by Bob Dylan’s The Time’s They Are A-Changin’, a tune that proved prescient.

Before long, Café Mambo was the hottest ticket in town and everyone from music industry insiders to tourists and locals were vying for a sunset spot.

The clean, clear waters over a sandy bottom are shallow to quite a way out on the right, deeper and rockier to the left. The colours of the sea here are truly magnificent: turquoise, azure blue and emerald green. Although very much a family beach, swimmers (especially children) should be aware of underwater rocks and, depending on the weather conditions, waves and currents.

Behind the beach are well-urbanised hills with a large hotel club just behind, the convenience of this making Cala Tarida a popular family beach. There are also shops right on the beach to buy inflatables, snorkel gear and beach balls if you wish to do more than simply sunbathing.

If you're looking for a solitary spot, there are some small hidden coves north of the beach with a selection of interestingly shaped rocks to swim out to.

Es Vedra is the source of many island myths and legends: some claim to have seen UFOs flying above it, old wives’ tales say it’s the ancient site of the lost city of Atlantis, others have heard siren calls from the shore and mystics say it has healing powers. As the sun goes down, it’s almost impossible not to feel energy emanating from the rock.

The experience can become quite emotional.

Meanwhile at the bottom of a rolling green hill, just like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, Cala D’Hort is one of Ibiza’s most magical and laid-back beaches. The arc-shaped golden beach boasts uninterrupted front row seats to the sunset, and you can take your pick from three seafood restaurants if you want the ‘dinner and a show’ sunset experience. On the left hand side of the hill, presiding over it all from its hilltop advantage is Es Boldado, while on the sand Restaurant Cala D’hort and Restaurante El Carmen offer slightly different vantage points. All the more reason to visit Es Vedra for sunset more than once!

This little Mediterranean island is one of the jewels of Spain and of the Balearic Islands. A tiny corner of the world with white sands and turquoise waters; no airports, no crowds, and just a few roads between its key points. Far from being an inconvenience, this is the best thing about the island. There are few places where you can relax and enjoy the sense of calm that you'll have in Formentera.

Have you even been to Formentera if you haven't taken a picture of ChezzGerdi's circus-red campervan? Dishing out giant frisbee-sized pizzas from its wood-fired oven, this beachside venue epitomises Formentera's leisurely pace.
